At one point in time, between 1838 and 1933, the United States issued gold coins for circulation. The Liberty Head bust was used as the design until 1907. The design was then changed to the Indian Head and Saint Gaudens motifs until 1933 when the “Great Depression” started. This prompted the recall of the coins which makes it very rare to find any of them today.

Bolender 13, with irregular date, 13 stars in arc pattern. Breen calls ‘very rare’ & indicates that ‘EF may be finest.’ Handsome uniform steel-gray patina over exceptionally clean surfaces. Just slight rubbing on high points.

Here is a eye-catching 1907 Roman Numerals High Relief Saint Gaudens $20.00 gold, a coin with needle-sharp detail. This is the wire rim variety. While this pleasing piece shows no wear, it is not suitable for standard grading. The coin has wiped off with a cloth making its surfaces a little “too bright,” and leaving nominal cloth lines.

History.
The Barber dime design was replaced in 1916 by the Winged Liberty Head design, more commonly referred to as the Mercury dime. The figure on the coin’s obverse is often thought to be the Roman god Mercury, but is in fact a depiction of Liberty (all other dimes except the Roosevelt dime feature an image of Liberty as well). The Mercury dime is considered to be one of the most visually appealing of all U.S. coins, and is highly sought after by collectors.
The Mercury dime was replaced in 1946 by the Roosevelt dime, designed in honor of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
