To help those who are looking for those rare coins, here is a list of hard to find ones that are worth moving “heaven and earth” for.

gold coins are something of a rare commodity. They were circulated only until 1933, which makes them expensive when they are auctioned. The nice thing about gold is that its value probably will never go down – making it a good investment.

Another rare coin sought by collectors is the Liberty Seated Dollar. These were last produced some time in the 19th century and are considered to be a rare find.

From 1875 to 1878, twenty cent coins were minted. This coin looks very much like a quarter and since its value is very low today, it is a coin worth looking for.

The Barber half dollars are rare coins that were minted from 1892 until 1915 and are collected by people depending on date or type. One of the challenges that occurs when searching for this coin is finding one in good condition.

The 1917 type One Standing Liberty Quarter is another coin worth owning. It was only minted for 2 years and shows the exposed breast of Ms. Liberty. This design created such an uproar that it had to be replaced and was only circulated for a year.

Mercury dimes were produced periodically during the 20th century. The market value of them is $50 a piece.

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a beautiful coin for collectors. They were only circulated for 4 years and are considered to be one of the all time rare coins to ever exist.

The Texas Commemorative Half Dollar is another rare coin. Only 150,000 of these were minted over a 4 year period and just 60% to 80% of these are still available today making it one of the hardest coins to find today.

The most expensive coin is the $20 Saint Gaudens. This was sold in an auction for nearly $8 million. The design is truly superb and the value of it has never dropped even during the 1980-82 bear market.

“Draped Bust” was the name given to a design of United States coins. It appeared on much of the regular-issue copper and silver United States coinage from 1795-1808. The denominations that featured the Draped Bust design included the half cent (1800-1808), large cent (1796-1807), half dime (1796-1805), dime (1796-1807), quarter (1796, 1804-1807), half dollar (1796-1807) and silver dollar (1795-1804). Gold coins did not carry this design.

The Greatest 100 U.S. Coins selected the 1804 silver dollar as the number one coin. It bears a heraldic eagle on the reverse and the price is prohibitive. Eight were minted in 1834 (Class I) and the rest minted in 1858 (Class II). The 1802 Half Dime ranks number 61. Only 3,000 were minted and the vast majority of these were either lost, melted or wore out. Most 1802 half dimes that do exist are in extremely poor condition. The 1797 Half Dollar (ranked 68)has the “small eagle” design. This design is rare due to the very low mintage and the inferior equipment and procedures. Less than 3,000 were minted. It’s companion, the even rarer 1796 half dollar (ranked 72) had a mintage of only 934. The pair constitute the sole mintage of the half dollar “small eagle” design. One is required for a complete Type Set, thus there are always more buyers than sellers. The 1796 quarter (seen above) ranked 71. It is also the “small eagle” design and is the only representative in this denomination of that design. Since it too is required for a complete Type Set, its price continues to rise. Only 6,000 quarters were minted that year. By comparison, the Tennessee State Quarter, one of five struck in 2002, had a mintage of 650,000,000. The mintage of all state quarters in 2002 was over 3 billion.)

This coin is very hard to find in this uncleaned condition and would make a great investment. The pictures do not do this beauty any justice and she looks much better in hand. The obverse is a solid au-58 and the reverse is a solid au-55. This is one of the nicest examples of this coin I have come across in a long time.

The Bland-Allison Act, of February 28, 1878, allowed the resumption of the silver dollar. The Morgan dollar, designed by George T Morgan weighs 412-1/2 grains and .900 fine conforms to the Act of January 18, 1837. The coin is composed of .900 silver and .100 copper. It was minted in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, Denver and San Francisco. The Morgan was minted through 1904 when it was suspended due to low demand and bullion supply had become exhausted. There were 270,232,722 silver dollars which were melted under provisions of the Pittman Act of 1918. In 1921 the Morgan silver dollar was resumed with some slight refinements. It was replaced by the Peace design, which was designed later that same year. The Peace dollar was designed by Anthony do Francisci.
